Description & Learning objectives

This course has been designed to explore the issues surrounding young people, depression and suicide. It will look at depression and self-harm and to explore why children may choose to harm themselves. It will explore how staff and carers can support young people with suicidal tendencies. In addition, it is important for staff to be able to identify treatment options and how children can get access to these services.

The learning outcomes for this course are as follows:

  • To consider mental health, well-being, and resilience in children and young people
  • To explore depression in children and young people
  • To look at self-harm in children and young people
  • To explore why a child or young person may consider suicide 
  • To consider how to support a child or young person with suicidal feelings
  • To identify what professional support is available for children and young people

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
