Description & Learning objectives

This course, which is suitable for anyone working with young people, will look at the stereotypes, myths, and reality of self-harm. It will also examine young people’s experiences, the assessment and management of risk, and building resilience in practice.

The course will also cover the practical skills and knowledge needed if a young person attempts to commit suicide. Delegates will be taught safe and effective techniques when rescuing a person from ligature (hanging). The course is specifically designed for delegates within fostering.

 

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To know what self-harm and suicide are, and who they effect
  2. To know what causes young people to self-harm
  3. What is shock and what does it look like?
  4. To be aware of the myths around self-harm and suicide
  5. To know what can be done to help and support people who self-harm and/or want to commit suicide
  6. To know how to manage the impact of self-harm and suicide as an individual and as a care environment
  7. To be aware of useful interventions for working with young people who self-harm, and promoting empowerment
  8. To understand the ligature risk assessment
  9. To be able to identify potential ligatures
  10. To be able to identify ligature points
  11. To know how to implement control measures
  12. To understand the use of the ligature knife – demonstration and practical exercise
  13. To understand how to manage the ligatured person
  14. To be aware of the personal risk assessment
  15. To be aware of the single rescuer and team approaches
  16. To know how to handle the situation post-ligature

This course is CPD accredited and adheres to the training, support and development standards outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011. It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators - namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).
