Positive behaviour support (PBS) is an ethical and evidence-based approach to supporting people who, for a variety of reasons engage in challenging behaviour. This course is designed as an introduction to PBS for staff and carers looking after or educating children and young people with learning disabilities (including autism).

PBS starts from the premise that all behaviour happens for a reason. No matter how 'dysfunctional' behaviour may appear to us, it serves a purpose (function) for the person exhibiting it. PBS enables us to assess the function of challenging behaviour and the environment within which it takes place. A focus on wellbeing and quality of life interventions means that the young person's needs are better met. A proven consequence of this is reductions in challenging behaviour and the use of restrictive practices. This fuels a virtuous cycle of continued improvements to quality of life and wellbeing, for both the focal young person and those looking after them.

Recent draft guidance has identified PBS as the preferred approach to supporting children and young people whose quality of life is negatively affected by challenging behaviour

 

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To understand the values and strategies of PBS
  2. To know how PBS can be used to improve quality of life and reduce challenging behaviour and the use of restrictive practices
  3. To understand what is meant by the term 'challenging behaviour'
  4. To be able to describe causal factors associated with challenging behaviour
  5. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of 'functions' of behaviour
  6. To understand the SE-ABC model as a tool for assessing functions of behaviour
  7. To understand the difference between 'proactive' and 'reactive' strategies
  8. To understand what a PBS plan is
  9. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of post-incident support for both young people and staff teams
